As the study of sleep developed in the twentieth century, a number of scientists adopted self-experiment strategies. This was done in order that they could control the conditions and variables of their experiments to a high degree, but also because the experience of the process was itself a valuable datum. Such approaches bring this scientific work close to questions of aesthetics. Duration, process and the undergoing of experience, alongside systems of recording and notation and their respective instruments characterise ths work.
